(Per Press Association.) Gbeytown, November 6. Nine persons were charged at the R. M. Court on Tuesday with cockfighting at Marsden, but the case was dismissed on technical grounds. The magistrate directed that further proceedings be taken in the matter. Hawera, November 6. At the Police Court yesterday, George Hillier, market gardener, charged on the information of the Deputy Official Assignee in the estate of Fred. Wallis with stealing £4OO, the property of the said estate. The money was lost some weeks ago. It included a £lOO note, which was paid into the bank at New Plymouth by accused, and so the affair was traced to him. He was remanded for a week. Timaru, November 6. At Geraldine, yesterday, Thomas Parks was committed for trial for rape on a girl between thirteen and fourteen. A fire broke out last night at half past eleven by which the stables of Peacock and Geavey, Zealandia Butchery, were destroyed with a quantity of oats, &c. Five horses were saved through thepresenceof mind of a passer by who, perceiving the fire at once led the animals out. The loss is estimated at £lOO and was uninsured. At 10.20 this morning a fire was discovered in the loft of the Clarendon Hotel, a very old hostelry, but it was soon extinguished. The damage was found to be trifling.
