BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present—Crs. Townley (chair), Lewis, Hepburn, Graham, Wilson, Brown, Joyce, and Smith. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following reports were read :— Public Works Report. The Public Works Committee reported that with the Engineer they had inspected the Roebuck road work. After a careful inspection the work had boon passed and the committee expressed themselves as pleased with the way the work had been done. The
formation of roadway and footpath were satisfactory. The committee recummendtd that a chain extra shingle be laid. Engineer's Report. , Roebuck Road Contract.—This work was finished yesterday, and inspected by the Public Works Committee to-day. The date for completion was November 15th. The work has been done satisfactorily, and I recommend that the final payment of £212 12s. as per certificate be made. Gas Lamps.—Have been fixed by the Gas Co. at the various sites selected by the committee appointed for that purpose. Gladstone Road.—With a view to the future cheap maintenance of this road and the convenience of persons using it, I believe the best course would be to remove the rails, having previously procured a sufficient supply of gravel for repairs and making good the crown of the road. The cost (which would depend in some degree on the distance the rails had to be carted), would probably not be less than £l5O. If this be considered too expensive, I think at least 100 yards of gravel should be got at once for repairs, and some steps taken to force the traffic on to the South side of the road between Roebuck Road and Bead’s gate. The reports were received. Respecting the part referring to lifting the rails, it was resolved to adopt the alternative suggestion of obtaining 100 yards of gravel and force the traffic on the South side of the road. Cr. Graham moved that the Engineer report at next meeting as to cost of lowering the most dangerous part of the tramway.— Carried. ’
Extraordinary Business. The accounts for the half year were laid on the table. Referring to the lease of the Patutahi Reserve Cr. Graham suggested that the Council should reserve the right to all stone and other minerals. He had heard there was a very good sample of limestone there. The suggestion was agreed to. Cr. Wilson’s notice of motion was then brought on viz : “ That no person be allowed to drive a vehicle through the town after sunset without lamps attached and lighted.” Cr. Wilson said several accidents ha ' recently occurred through reckless driving by persons without lamps. The motion was agreed to, the words to ba added as an amendment to Bye-law 9. Special Meeting. The Council then resolved itself into a special meeting to consider Cr. Smith’s notice of motion in regard to brick walls. After discussion it was resolved that the alteration be not made, only Crs. Smith and Brown voting in favor of the proposed alteration.
