POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB.
SPRING MEETING 1884. President : C. Dean Pitt, Esq. Vice-Presi-dent: J. W. Johnson, Esq. Stewards: Messrs. G. L. Sunderland, D. Dobbie, F. Dufaur, J. W. Nolan, 8. Stevenson, E. Murphy, and S. C. Caulton. Judge : W. F. Crawford, Esq. Handicapper: J. O. Evett, Esq. Clerk of Scales: W. Ratcliffe, Esq. Clerk of the Course: A. Pritchard, Esq. Starter: G. W. Winter, E.-q. Had yesterday been made to order it could not have been more suitable for racing than it was. Any appearance of rain which showed when we left the Albion Club in 8. M. Wilson’s brake, the genial proprietor of the Club himself handling the ribbons, had vanished before the course was reached. Arrived on the ground the improvements which have been made on the course were very noticeable. The whole of the course has been laid down in grass, and the scrub, except sufficient to add to the beauty of the landscape has been cleared off, so that Poverty Bay can now boast of as good a course as there is in the colony. The only objection is its distance from town, but the inauguration and completion of the proposed Gisborne-Ormond railway will obviate this difficulty, and will make the outing more enjoyable. ’ The grand stand was fully occupied with a gay assemblage, and the course on both sides was lined with spectators and vehicles of every description. The lowest estimate places the number present at about 1,200. Messrs. Stock and Cohen had their new patent totalizator on the lawn, and Messrs. Richardson & Co. had one in the adjoining paddock. Mr. James Erskine had a refreshment booth, and the department of wines and spirits was in charge of Messrs. W. Cooper and Hogan and Currie. There was the usual batch of “ doodle’m buck ” and the “ only honest game ” men, who did a fair business, but the absence of the “ leather-lunged ” gentry was not by any means regretted. Precisely at twelve o’clock the whole of the horses colored on the card for the Flying Handicap, with the exception of the Cat, made their appearance. Unfortunately for the spectators several of the
colors were wrongly specified, making it very difficult for those who did not know the horses to distinguish them. Tnere was a good deal of fiddling at the post, Squire and one or two others giving some trouble. After five false starts Miss Dargon and Yankee got away together, with the Squire in close attendance, the others being in a bunch about three lengths behind. The race lay between the first two from the start, Miss Dargon winning rather easily, with Yankee a bare length behind and Emir Bey third, Squire, Leonata, Queen of the Vale, Abraham, and
Lizette bringing up the rear. Eleven entered for the Handicap Hack Flat. There were several bad-’Starts. Venosta got away first, followed by the Moore and Lady Louise, with the others some distance behind, Blue Jacket amongst the ruck. At the half mile post Lady Louise went up to the front, and for a time looked dangerous, but a quarter of a mile further on Blue Jacket and Gipsy came up, and there was something of a race, but the latter won hands down. There were 75 in the inside totalisator, only three of which were on the winner, yielding a dividend of £22 10s. Mr. Trimmer’s win was greeted with applause. The six acceptances started for the Handicap Hurdles. The lot came away in couples and went the first round rather slow, Maccaroni and Flying Scud leading, with Rangatira and the Star next, and Seagull bringing up the rear. Passing the stand the second time Maccaoni was in front running well, Seagull second, and the Star third. At the mile and a quarter post Honer brought Maccaroni up and a grand race ensued for the next quarter of a mile between Maccaroni, Rangatira, Scud, and Mormon. Morning Star fell away to the
rear pumped out. Coming over the last hurdle the rider of Rangatira lost his stirrup, and Mormon threw his rider. Maccaroni came away and won by several lengths. Seagull second and Rangatira third. Morning Star was last, lengths behind. There were 214 in tbe totalizator, 57 of which were on
the winner, and 82 on Dividend, £? 17s. Outside: 6—only 1 ml the winner/ Six entered for the Hack HurdM; Ml/f Songster filly (9st), Ada (9st 61b), Davy (?8y ffib), Nemesis (Ost 101 b), Blue Jacket (lost 101 b), (Ost 4lb). Blue Jacket was fancied for this on account of hifl previous performance. He ran Well until the last hurdle, when Kennedy, his rider, cams io grief. Ada’s jockey came off at the first jump. The race was a vdry fair one between three of the four whom fortune favored by keeping them on their legs. Thd winner turned up in Nemesis. Totalizator dividend £l7 9s. Nine horses started for the Spring Handicap, which was of coUtrt? looked forward to as the race of the day. Abrdham was scratched. The lot got away well together 1 after two false starts, the Cat and Penguin being in the van, Maccaroni and Lizette two length-' behind, the others in a heap. Passing the stand the first time Yankee had a commanding lead but only kept it to tbe Cud of the first mile. Here Leonata made an effort and got to the front but failed to retain the advantage thus gained. A quarter of a mile from home Yankee was again leading with Maccaroni un his flanks and Emir Bey next. Emir Bey then put on steam and got the lead. The lot came round the turn under the whip, but Emir maintained his position and won by two lengths, Yankey second, Queen of the Vale third, Maccaroni next, then Miss Dargon, Lizette, Director and the Cat last. There were 246 on the totalizator, 25 on the winner, 80 on Leonata, and 28 on Q icen of the vale. The dividend was £8 17s. 1 ear Not, Rangatira, and Lizette wore scratched for the Maiden Plate, leaving a field of six. They got away to a good start at the first attempt, Miss Dargon and Christina having a shade the best of it. These two together with Squire raced well throughout the two former bring neck and neck nearly all the way. Christina came at the turn and won with a good deal to spare, Miss Dargon a length behind and Squire a tolerably good third. The others were in a cluster about three lengths in rear. On the totalizator there were 151, 78 on the winner and 49 on Miss Dargon. The dividend was £1 9s. The Maiden Plate, for which five started, resulted in an easy victory for Christina, with Miss Dargon second and the Squire third. The Consolation was one of the beat races of the day, the four entries—Yankee (Bst 71b), Pen* guin (7st 21b), Flying Scud (7st 41b), and Queen of the vale, (7st 111 b), running well together the whole length. Penguin won a hard fought fight by half Scud being about the same distance behind, Queen of the Vale and Yankee last. The totalizator paid a £5 dividend. Nothing now remained for us to do but to jnmp on again behind the greys, pass everything on the road, and arrive at the Club just in time for dinner. Appended are the results.
