[reuter’s telegrams.] St. Petersburg, October 20. A most destructive fire occurred to-day in one of the principal streets of Moscow, causing the total destruction of eighty shops. The damage is estimated at 3,000,000 roubles (£500,000 sterling.) New York, October 20. Governor Cleveland, of New York State, a candidate for the Presidency, was assaulted to-day, at Albany, but escaped uninjured. His assailant has been arrested. October 21. A most disastrous fire has occurred at Carthage, a town in this State, on the Black River. Numerous houses, factories, and several churches have been totally destroyed, and a great loss of property has resulted. [Own correspondent.] Dunedin, October 28. A girl named Melita Mellinger, aged 11, while engaged plucking flowers from the railway bank, was startled by the train from Palmerston coming round a corner. She fell over, and carriages passed over her left leg, completely crushing it. She was conveyed by the same train to the Dunedin Hospital, where the leg was amputated below the knee.
