[Per United Press Association.] Napier, October 18. Chiarini’s circus and menagerie opened this afternoon in Clive Square. There will be another exhibition in the evening. The circus remains five days. The Te Anau brought to-day nineteen immigrants who arrived by the Doric, seventeen being females. Hokitika, October 18. The members of the County Council being about to go out of office gave a banquet on Wednesday night, to which the heads of the Government department were invited. The affair was a great success. Christchurch, October 18. The New Zealand Baptist Union Conference was concluded yesterday. Thomas Dick, Esq., of Dunedin, was elected Chairman for 1885. A Churchmen’s Club has been formed here. His Lordship the Primate is president. Already 300 members have been enrolled. The rooms will be opened next Monday evening. Mr. Jones, over 20 years foreman of works at Lyttelton gaol, and the oldest gaol official in the Colony, died yesterday. It is supposed his death was hastened by grief at the loss of his son who was drowned 18 months ago.
