Her Majesty’s ships Nelson, Diamond and Espiegle leave here to-morrow for New Guinea where Commander Erskine will formally declare a British protectorate. The German Warship Elizabeth left for Port Jackson yesterday, and it is believed she is also bound for New Guinea. Sailed this afternoon —The steamship Wairarapa for Auckland. Tawhiao and the other Maori chiefs are passengers for New Zealand. Unusually hot weather is being experienced here. Melbourne, October 17. Arrived this morning—Tarawera. The Tasmanian Government have agreed to Mr. Service’s proposals to protest against the conclusion of the Anglo-German Confederation regarding the Pacific Annexation, The N.S.W. Government have refused and so also has South Australia, pending receipt of further information as to the alleged convention. The New Zealand Government has not yet replied to Mr. Service. Adelaide, October 17. Mr. W. Show, locomotive superintendent, has been suspended in consequences of a charge against him by his superior officers. Mr. Matiinson,in the Legislative Assembly, has given a notice of motion thereanent, which reflects upon the action of the Commissioner of Works. The Ministry regard the motion as tantamount to a vote of want of confidence, and the House has accordingly adjourned until Tuesday, when the motion will be discussed.
