The Invercargill Fire.
[Own CouMEsm'PENT., iNVERCARfiiLi, October 16, The inquiry into the recent fire ended in a ludicrous way. It appeared the enquiry was asked for by Mr. T. Lome, of the Fire Insurance Association, the private night watch* man having told him on the the 27th ult, that he knew of a rich old man who had offered another person £5O to burn down his premises. On being called to give evidence, the night watchman informed the jury that the case referred to occurred in another part of the colony several years ago. This explanation was received with roars of laughter, and the enquiry at once collapsed. The coroner said there was nothing in the evidence from beginning to end to help the jury to come to a conclusion as to the origin of the fire. He did not see the use of holding these enquiries unless some one had pertinent evidence to offer. The jury returned an open verdict,
