Accidents, Offences, &c.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 16. Yesterday morning, while shunting a coal train, the driver being engaged oiling the wheels, and the fireman alone on the engine, the regulator happened to fall and the engine started off. The fireman jumped, leaving the engine going at half-speed and without control. When the engine reached the tunnel it came into contact with a passenger train from Onehunga, but the driver noticed that the loose engine was uncontrolled, as when he blew his whistle the speed was not slackened on it, so he put on the brake, and therefore the collision was not so violent as otherwise would have been the case, but the passengers were greatly alarmed though none were hurt. The Onehunga engine was broken and the cowcatcher carried away, but neither carriages nor engines were thrown off the line.

Dunedin, October 16. A man named Synis, for playing the threecard trick in a railway carriage, was fined £lO. In the Divorce Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Williams, the case of F. W. Newman r. Eliza Newman and Bladder was heard. Petitioner asserted that respondent is at present living with co-respondent at Waimate. He had not seen her for the past nine years, but had not previously had funds to institute proceedings. The case was adjourned for evidence as to cohabitation at Waimate.
