[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, October 16. The Chairman of the Early Closing Association was fined one shilling yesterday, with costs, for holding a demonstration in front of a non-closing draper’s shop. Christchurch, October IG. The annual Conference of the N. Z. Baptist Union commenced here yesterday. There were present thirty-one delegates, representing fifteen churches. The annual report showed : Church members, 2,3.56; Sunday scholar’, 3,818, A public meeting was held in the evening, at which there was a good attendance, Mr. Dick presided. Addresses were delivered by the President, the Reverend Alfred North, and other Ministers, Duneiin, October 16. Dalgetty and Company received yesterday a cable advice that the s.s. Coptic left New Plymouth on the 11th inst., the first port of call being Port Chalmers. She will be followed at regular monthly intervals by her sister White Star Liners, the lonic and Doric, and two new built steamships, Altira and Tainui, built specially for this trade by William Denny and Bros., Dumbarton.
