SPORTING

[Own Correspondent.] Wellington, October 6. A cricket match was played on Saturday afternoon between members of Parliament and lawyers. It created considerable interest and attracted a large crowd of spectators to the Basin Reserve. The match proved an easy victory for the legislators, the members of the legal fraternity having all been disposed of in the first innings for 17, against 65 scored by their opponents. The game narrowly escaped being a one innings defeat, the lawyers, after their second innings, being only one run ahead of the legislators. This necessitated the latter going in again to obtain the two runs required to win, but they continued playing till time was called, and eventually won with a large number of runs to spare. The chief features of the game were the good batting of Mr. W. F. Buckland and Mr. Hursthouse, the admirable fielding of Mr. Guiness, and the long-stopping of Mr. J. G. Wilson. Mr. Hursthouse was the highest scorer for the legislators, and Mr. W. L. Rees for the lawyers. Mr. Buckland was the most successful bowler. [reuter’s telegrams.] Melbourne, October 6. Plausible has been heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup at 25 to 1.
