MEETING OF CREDITORS.

A meeting of creditors in the estate of Mr. E. A. Pavitt, surveyor, was held this morning. Mr. Nolan appeared for the debtor, and Mr. Finn on behalf of the Deputy Official Assignee, who is at present in Auckland. In the absence of the Deputy Assignee, Mr. Adair was voted to the chair. Mr. Nolan explained that the pos’ ion of the estate was as follows: — Liabilities, £ll4 17s. lOd.; Assets, £B7. In reply to the chairman Mr. Nolan stated that the debtor could not make any proposals to the creditors. The debtor stated that he had been out of work during the whole of August, and would be out of work after to-day. He was never in constant employment. His wife during the winter had a verbal order from him to get £3 a week from Captain Winter. He was aware his wife was getting clothing previous to her departure for England. He could not say as to how he got into debt when his salary amounted to £3 a week. He had no horses now. The one he had as his own he sold about six months ago. He had no interest in the Whautaupoko Block. He was to have a small interest in a block of land up the coast. He found no portion of the money to send his wife home to her relations. It was of no use his calling his creditors together to make any arrangement with them, as there was at present no work to be done, and when there was, he was not constantly employed. To Mr. Finn : The horse he now had in his possesion was the property of Mr. Newton, and he had had it since that gentleman left for England. He had earned £4 or £5 since the date of his filing, but he had not yet been paid. During the last three months he had not paid any money away, other than to his solicitor, amounting to about £6. The Chairman considered the whole thing a most disgraceful affair. As nothing more could be done until the return of the Deputy Assignee, the meeting adjourned.
