[Own Correspondent.] House of Representatives. Wellington, October 3. Third Headings. In the House yesterday The Trustees, Executors, and Agency Companies’ Act Amendment Bill, was read a third time and passed. Replies to Questions. Replying to a question, The Government stated that Press free passes on railways were not to be restored. First Readings. The following Bills were read a first time A Bill to provide that Judges of the Supreme Court shall henceforth be appointed for five years and no longer. (Grey). A Bill to amend the Armed Constabulary Act 1867, (Guinness). Life Assurance Policies’ Bill, and a Bill to make provision for the better management of the coal export ports of the colony, (Vogel). Motions. On the motion of Sir Julius Vogel it was arranged that Monday evening be utilised for Government business. Public Works Statement. In reply to an enquiry Sir Julius Vogel said Government had not yet determined when the Public Works Statement would be brought down. Bills Passed. The Mining Companies’ Act Amendment Bill, the Anatomy Act Amendment Bill, the Employment of Females and others Act Amendment Bill, and the Bills of Exchange Act Amendment Bill, were read a third time and passed. Second Readings. On the motion of Sir George Grey, The Criminal Law Procedure Bill was read a second time. The Affirmations in Lien of Oaths Extension Bill passed through Committee, and was read a third time and passed. Bill Committed. The Gold Duty Abolition Bill was committed after much discussion. In Committee, Mr. Balance moved as an amendment, That the Act be suspended until brought into operation by the Government by an Order-in-Council. After some discussion the amendment was carried by 38 to 9. Mr. Seddon moved as a further addition the words “ Provided that the said order-in-Council be not delayed beyond the 30th September, 1885.”

After considerable debate Mr. Seddon agreed to extend the time from 30th September, 1885 to 31st December, 1885. The Committee divided. Ayes, 9 ; noes, 46. Mr. Seddon’s addition was, therefore, negatived, and the Bill was then reported with amendments. The House rose at 1.5 a.m.
