Merlin.—This fine horse will stand during the season at Tutoko, near Waerenga-a-hika. Court.—A Native was fined 10s., in default twenty-four hours, for drunkenness this morning. The fine was paid. Land Sale.—A sale of sections in the township of Awanui will be held at the Land Office, Gisborne, on Monday, October 27. Extraordinary Travelling.—From a cable message it will be seen that the mails which left Auckland on the 19th of last month were delivered in London on Friday, having been only 38 days on the journey. Meeting of Creditors.—The meeting of creditors in the estate of E. A. Pavitt called for this morning was adjourned for a week in order to allow the Christchurch creditors to put in claims. Gun Club.—There was no meeting of the Gun Club on Saturday afternoon owing to the supply of pigeons having run short. A further number will arrive at an early date, and the next meeting will probably be held on Saturday week.
Life Insurance.—Mr. B. Whitman, from the chief office of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society (Limited), is at present staying at the Albion Club Hotel, where he will be happy to give any information desired by intending insurers, or be will wait upon persons desirous of assuring as per arrangement.
Harbor Bill.—A member of the Legislative Council was on board the Tarawera yesterday on his way to Auckland from the Session, and to several gentlemen of this town expressed himself very favorably towards the Gisborne Harbor Bill, and considered that it would safely pass through the Upper House, with the endowments.
Imported Bull.—By the Tarawera yesterday, Mr. John Clarke, of Opou, received a pure bred shorthorn bull, with a pedigree which will show at once that he will be an acquisition to the district. He is the 42nd Duke of Derrimut, roan, calved 4th April, 1883. His sire is Oxford Cherry Duke (32,016), dam 27th Duchess of Derrimut, and was bred by Messrs. Robinson, Bros., Colac. Entertainment.—The programme issued for to-night’s entertainment on behalf of the Library funds should be the means of filling the hall. The universal favorites Madame Stewart, Miss Booth, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Goldsmith, and Mr. Bennett, as vocalists, a solo by Mr. Flood, readings by Messrs. Bourke, Greenwood, and Warren, the comic element delineated by Master Vandy, and contributions by a host of small fry, make up a good shilling’s worth. Scholastic.—At the last meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board the following business of local interest was transacted :— Correspondence—From Gisborne, asking that the cost of fitting up the school-house with gas should be paid for by the Board. Deferred for want of funds. —From Matawhero, asking that the alterations might be passed. It was agreed to ask a local man to do so.—From Ormond, asking for a new schoolhouse. Deferred.—From Patutahi, asking for the sum of £lO voted in April for water, as well as additional school desks. The desks to be forwarded, and the grant to be paid.
