British Protectorate over South Pacific Islands.

[reuter’s telegrams.] Melbourne, September 27. Mr. Service, Premier, has telegraphed to Mr. Murray Smith in London, instructing him to consult with the other Agents-General on the question of the protectorate over the Pacific Islands, and to co-operate with them in joint representations to Earl Derby, and if necessary to Mr. Gladstone on the subject of such protectorate. It is is understood the Governments of South Australia, Queensland, and New Zealand have telegraphed similarly to the Agents-General of these Colonies. Further communications have passed between Mr. Service and Mr. Stuart (Premier of New South Wales) on the subject of the former’s proposal, but the breach between the two Colonies is in no wise lessened.
