PARLIAMENTARY.
[Own Correspondent.] House of Representatives. Wellington, September 26. In the House yesterday Sir Julius Vogel stated that the Government would not disturb the action of the late Government in reappointing Sir F. Dillon Bell, Agent-General for two years. New Bills. Sir George Grey introduced a Bill to enable the people of New Zealadd to make changes
in their constitution when they think it necessary so to do. The Education Vote. Sir Julius Vogel stated that in view of the strong objections made by Government supporters to the reduction of the Education capitation, Government had decided to continue the capitation “grant at the same rate as hitherto. Second Readings. Sir George Grey moved the second reading of the Gisborne Harbor Board Empowering Bill which was agreed to. On the motion of Mr. Levestam, the Adulteration Prevention Extension Bill was read a second time. Mr. Bradshaw moved the second reading of the Eight Hours Bill. Along discussion ensued, some members characterising the Bill as an absurdity, and useless, as working men were quite able to take care of themselves in such matters, while Mr. Stout and others thought the measure would have the effect of preventing long hours of work. Ultimately the motion was negatived by 32 to 30, and the Bill was thrown out. On the motion of Mr. Bruce, the Seamen’s •Representation Bill was read a second time.
