Extraordinary Attempt at Suicide.
[Own Correspondent.] Auckland, Septembei’ 26. A man named Frederick Davidson was brought to the Hospital yesterday from Northcate suffering from severe injuries received from the discharge of 20 lbs. of gunpowder. It appears the unfortunate fellow, having determined to take his life, procured 20 lbs. of gunpowder, and placed it in an iron boiler, and heating a soldering iron put his head into the boiler and then applied the red hot iron to the gunpowder and deliberately blew himself up. Upon assistanc6 arriving a ghastly scene presented itself. The man’s flesh was hanging in strips from his body, and from his head downwards was completely denuded of skin. Very slight hopes are entertained of his surviving. He said he did the deed because his arm was paralysed so that he could not work, and he was tired of life. Some moie powder has been found in his residence, and also a loaded pistol. He is 65 years of age and has been living alone, his wife residing in Auckland.
