The Case against Sergeant Cleary. CLEARY DENOUNCED AS UNFIT FOB HIS POSITION. CONSTABLE WILSON COMMITTED FOR PERJURY. [Own Correspondent.] Napier, September 24. The case against Sergeant Cleary was concluded yesterday afternoon. A Maori constable named Ngakaro corroborated the defendant’s statement as to being at the bath from 6 till 9 on the evening when the assault was committed. Other evidence was taken, and then Captain Preece said a very serious assault had been committed, but as there was nothing besides Lofley’s statement to connect defendant with the assault he would give him the benefit of the doubt, but the evidence had shown defendant was utterly unfit to remain a member of the Armed Constabulary, and his Worship hoped the commanding officer would see Cleary did not remain in it. The case having been dismissed Captain Preece ordered Constable Wilson into the prisoner’s dock, and committed him for trial on a charge of wilful and corrupt perjury.
