PARLIAMENTARY.
(Per Press Association.) Legislative Council. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10. Replies to Questions. Replying to Mr. Williamson, The Colonial Secretary said the branch lines of railway from Hamilton to Cambridge would be ready for opening about the middle of October. First Readings. The Married Womens’ Property Bill was received from the Lower House and read a first time. Motions. Mr. Chamberlain moved a motion, affirming that the administration of the law for the protection of young ffsh is anything but satisfactory. Mr. Lahman seconded. Mr. Waterhouse considered the motion practically uncalled for in regard to sea fish. There was no limit to the supply of fish, and it was a fact that the quantity of fish being raised in England was very many times greater than had ever before been the case. Some action similar io that indicated by the mover might be necessary when the population of New Zealand reached 20,000,000 or so. Colonel Biett was of opinion that some action was quite necessary, and refer) ed *,he great waste that took place owing to the existing custom of catching fish indiscriminately. After further discussion the metion was agreed to. New Bills. The Colonial Secretary introduced ? Bill to extend the operation of the registration of Births and Deaths Act, which was read a first time.
Mr. Wilson introduced a Bill for declaring the Liability of shareholders in companies carrying on the business of trustees and executors. The Bill was formally read a first time. Imprest Supply (No. 2), was read a third time and passed. Second Readings. The Colonial Secretary moved the second reading of the Impounding Bill, the object of which was to consolidate the laws relating to the impounding of cattle in the colony. Agreed to. On the motion of the Colonial Secretary, the Land Transfer Bill, also a Consolidation Bill, was read a second time and referred to the Committee. Committals. The Timber Floating Bill was committed. Several clauses were amended, and progress was reported. The Council adjourned at 4. C5.
