POPPENS AND M'GRATH.

THE NOSE EATER. PASSING SPURIOUS COINS. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, September 17. Daniel Mahoney, for having bitten off the nose of James Fearon, was to-day committed for trial. The police have in hand, and will, in due course, hand over to the assignee in the estate of Wm, Poppens, money sufficient to pay in full all claims against his estate, as well as all cost of arresting him in Australia. Both McGrath and Poppens are out bail. The latter’s case will be gone into to-day. Timaru, September 17. At the Magistrate’s Court, Waimate, yesterday, Samuel Bedman and George Bedman were committed for trial for making counter, feit coins. At the same court J. Mitchell was committed for trial on two charges of housebreaking. Napier, September 17. Dragging operations are still proceeding for the body of a man named Jewery, supposed to have been drowned in the harbor on Saturday night. John Kenn, alias John Gallagher, a pensioner of the 70th Regiment, was found on the Ruataniwha Plains in an exhausted condition on Saturday. He was carried to the Onga Onga Hotel, but died in the afternoon. He had been out all through Friday night, which was bitterly cold, with rain and snow. Deceased was of intemperate habits, and is supposed to have been intoxicated when he laid down to sleep. Wanganui, September 17. A middle-aged man named Graham was found drowned at the wharf steps at 9 o’clock yesterday morning. He had been drinking. The Supreme Court sits to-morrow. Judge Richmond will preside. There is a very heavy calendar.
