TRAIN OFF THE RAILS. DAMAGE BY FLOODS. RECOVERY OF THE BODIES. [Per United Press Association.] Woodville, September 6. The bodies of the two women (Mrs. Seary and Mrs. McKenzie) who were drowned during Tuesday night, were found yesterday, four miles from where the accident occurred. Mrs. Seary body was still clinging to the raft. A formal inquest was held this morning. The body of Mrs. McKenzie will be sent to Dunedin for burial. Christchurch, September 6. Reports state that about 30 yards of the Road in Otari Gore have been swept away by the recent storms. The coach with the mails reached Bealey on Tuesday, and had to go on to meet the Hokitika coach. Cassidy managed to get the mails and passengers across the breach in the road. The telegraph line is much knocked about, and all the rivers there are terribly flooded. At the inquest to-day on Walter Lavitt, who perished in the fire at Heather’s hotel yesterday, no fresh facts were adduced, except that deceased was accustomed to read and smoke in bed. The verdict was “accidentally burnt to death.” Auckland, September 6. A goods train from Te Awamutu to Auckland ran of the line near Rangiriri last evening, through the points of the loop line not being properly fixed. Fortunately the engine driver noticed that the points were out of place before coming up, and shut off the steam, otherwise a serious loss of life and damage to property would have resulted. As it was several rails and sleepers were torn up.
Rosina Smith has been further remanded until Tuesday.
Wanganui, September 6. Two men (Johnston and Rees) have been committed for trial for forging telegrams, other cases remain to be heard against J ohnstone.
Oamaru, September 6. The wife of Philip Mason cut her throat last evening and died in a few minutes afterwards. Her mind had been affected for some time.
