FATAL FIRE. INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL ON FIRE. [Per United Press Association.] Dunedin, September 5. A fire broke out at the Industrial School at Caversham. It was confined entirely to the schoolroom, which was of wood, and was detached from the other building. The schoolroom was a building about 80 feet long and 30 feet wide. The workshop and tools were also burned. All that was saved was a number of musical instruments used by the school band. The teaching apparatus, books, etc., were also burnt. The school was left locked up at 5 o’clock, and the fire which was left burning is suppoaed to have spread and occasioned the disaster*. Christchurch, September 5. Shortly after three o’clock yesterday morning, Feather’s Hotel, Lincoln Road, occupied by J. Hansman, was destroyed by fire. The origin is unknown. Hansman was away in Timaru. Mrs. Hansman retired at midnight, when all was safe. She left a small fire in the dining-room grate, and the fire seemed to have commenced in that part of the building. After the fire a Jew hawker lodging at the hotel, named Walter Leditt, was missed, and his chaired remains were subsequently found. Insurance —building—£1,500 in the Union. Furniture, stock, etc.—£l,ooo in the Australian Mercantile Union. A four-roomed cottage in Montreal street has been destroyed by fire. It was occupied by William Booth, and owned by Mr. Parkerson. The building was insured for £l5O, and the furniture for £5O, both in the United office.
