The Elections.—ln another column will be found the advertisement of Mr. Henry Clayton, wooing the suffrages of the electors. Mr. Clayton is an old and tried civic servant, having been elected three times, and served at the Council Board for seven years.
In Bankruptcy.—A meeting of creditors in Direy’s estate which should have been held to-day lapsed for want of a quorum. The meeting will be held at 11 o’clock to-morrow morning.
Commercial,—We draw special attention to our telegraph report of the Auckland markets which will henceforth be supplied every Thursday, instead of Saturday as heretofore.
Fire Brigade.—Friday, 19th instant, will be the anniversary of the formation of the local Fire Brigade. We understand they will mark the importance of the occasion by a torchlight procession through the town. The gear will all be brought out, and probably the Artillery Band will lend their aid to make the affair a success.

Tenders.—Tenders for the additions to the Albion Club Hotel were opened at noon today, as follows :—J. W. Macrkell, £873 ; W. O. Skeet, £1,035; J. R. Morgan, £975; J. Ponsford, £995 10s. ; John Somervell, £867; R. Houlden, £957. The successful tenderer will not be declared until receipt uf wires from Napier and Auckland. Store for Sale.—We draw special attention to an announcement of a store at Mataahu, Open Bay, which, has been for some time carried on successfully by the late firm of Porter and Croft. The terms are easy, and the acquirement of the propeity will speedily place a fortune in the hands of an enterprising man.
Scientific.—The ordinary average speed of sound is about 1120 feet per second. Light, on the other hand, travels at the rate of 195,000 miles in a second. The time a flash of light takes to traverse a few miles may be regarded as nil, and the distance of the source of thunder or of a cannon is calculated by the number of seconds which elapse between the flash and the report, as seen and heard by us where we stand. There are 5280 ft in a mile; so that if between four and five seconds elapse between the flash and the report, the source of the sound is a mile off, and so on.
