SPORTING.
AUSTALIANS V. SOUTH OF ENGLAND. [Reuter’s Telegrams.] London, August 28. The Australian Cricketers commenced a match to-day at Gravesend against an Eleven representing the South of England, composed as follows :—Lord Harris (Captain), Messrs. M. C. Kemp, H. V. Page, Christopherson, A. P. Lucas, W. W. Read, W. E. Roller, Jesse Hide, G. Wotton, O’Brien and Humpheys. The weather was fine and the attendance of spectators good. The Australians went in first, and remained at the wickets the whole day, most of the batsmen making an excellent defence, and displaying grand cricket. The highest scorers were :— Bannerman, b.. .. .. 44 McDonnell, c 66 Murdoch, b .. .. ..59 Giffen, c .. .. .. 32 Blacham, not out .. .. 55 When the stumps were drawn the Australians score stood at 354, with 9 wickets down.
