AUSTRALIANS 7. CAMBRIDGE. [Reuter’s Telegrams] . London, August 26. The cricket match Australians v. past and present of Cambridge was resumed to-day at Brighton. There was a large attendance of spectators, and the weather was fine, but the wicket was much cut up. The Home team’s first innings closed for 135. The following were the highest scorers— Whitfield, b 21 Ford, c 34 Martin, not out .. .. .. 39 The Australians went in a second time ar d put together 131. The highest scorers being— Bannerman, c 44 Bonnor, c and b .. .. 86 The Home team, requiring 236 to win, then went to the wickets, and when play ceased for the day their score stood at 68, with 7 wickets down. Later. The cricket match at Brighton was concluded to-day. The Cambridge Eleven in their second innings were only able to put together 94, and the Australians thus won by 141 runs.
FOOTBALL. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, August 28. A football match was played yesterday afternoon between the pupils of Christ College (Christchurch), and the Wellington College. There was a pouring rain all the afternoon, and the ground was in very bad condition. After a most exciting game it resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. The visitors were invited to dinner at the college after the match. The team return home on Friday. Mr. A. McCartney has purchased from Messrs. Common, Shelton and Co., the wellknown thorough-bred horse Piscatorious. This grand entire is by Traducer, out o Fanny Fisher by Fisherman, the only strain of that splendid sire that there is in New Zealand. Not only Mr. McCartney, but Hawke’s Bay is to be congratulated on securing this horse.
