CORRESPONDENCE.

(We do not hold ouraelves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.) THE TOWN RANGER, &c. TO THE'EDITOR. Sir, —At the meeting of the Borough Council held on Tuesday evening, Councillor Smith tabled a notice of motion referring to the Town Ranger and Inspector of Nuisances, stating that he considered the office was at present very unsatisfactorily filled, and that it should be given to a man who would devote the whole of his time to it. Cr. Smith deserves the greatest credit for bringing this matter forward, for it has been apparent to every ratepayer in the town that it has been

an act of the greatest injustice to pay a man a salary which would support many a poor struggling man, the man so paid being a firstclass mechanic and in constant work. For years past complaints have been made that the work was never properly done, and it was equally clear that the present man could not do it, as his time has been wholly employed at his trade. This greasing the fat “lady pig ” has been manifest to all for a long time past, and it is to be hoped that this time the Council will decide upon giving the job to some man who really wants it and who will give his whole time to the duties.—l am, &c., Justice. [We cannot see in what manner the fact of the Ranger being a mechanic affects the matter. All the Council have to consider is whether the work is efficiently done, and if so it is hardly worth while making an alteration.—Ed.]
