[Per Press Association] . MURDER WILL COME OUT. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. RECENT RAILWAY ACCIDENT. New Plymouth, August 20. The inquest on Charnock's firo in 1883, was concluded last night, when the following verdict was returned—“ The jury are of opinion that the premises of George Charnock, St. Aubyns Street, were wilfully set on fire on January 29th, 1883, and the evidence points to Mrs. Charnock as the guilty party.” A rider was added to the effect that great credit was due to Sergeant-Major Pardy for the skill shown in bringing out evidence after so long a time had elapsed since the fire. The coroner committed Mrs. Charnock for trial on the charge of arson. Mr. Charnock was remanded, as Sergeant Pardy stated he would have to bring both prisoners before another Court on other charges. Auckland, August 20. Michael Haydon, who attempted to poison himself with “ rough on rats,” is recovering. Wellington, August 20. An enquiry has been held into the recent railway accident on the Hutt line, with the result that the porter, whose duty it was to look after the points, has been dismissed. Dunedin, August 20. At Cromwell an office and dwelling occupied by Mr. Chas. Coleclough, an agent, were destroyed by fire. Mr. Coleulough was the only inmate, and had just time to escape when the alarm was given. The building was entirely gutted. The building and furniture were insured for £5OO in the New Zealand office.
