Charge of Wilful Murder.
[Per Press Association.] Auckland, August 20. The body of Rosina Smith’s baby was found by the police buried in Mason’s garden, Parnell Road. The woman was taken up to Parnell in a cab by a detective, and when passing the garden she said “ don’t take me in there. It’s there.” She now states that it was ill, and that she gave it a dose of medicine to make it quiet, when it died. She also states that she was deceived by a married man. A charge of wilful murder has been laid against Rosina Smith, whose baby was found buried in Mason’s garden, Parnell. She has been remanded to the 26th inst. It has been ascertained that accused proceeded to the office of the Registrar of Births yesterday, and there registered the birth of her child in the name of Emily Wilson. She is believed to be an immigrant by the Rangitikei. She opened a linen shop under the name of Miss Wilson. The shop was fitted out for her by a man named Wilson, to whom it was understood she was engaged. An inquest will be held on the child. In the meantime an autopsy will be made which will probably lead to the discovery of the truth or faisity of the laudanum said to have been given. Accused has refused to take any food since she has been in custody, and states she lias neither eaten or drank since Sunday last.
