INTERPROVINCIAL

LUMPER STRIKE IN CHRISTCHURCH. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, August 15. By order of the Lyttelton Lumper’s Union, the men employed in Robert Paxton & Co.’s store turned out this morning. The direct cause is the reduction in wages from Is. 3d. to Is. per hour. The firm demur to paying so high wages for the light work connected with attending their grain drying machinery. The men themselves are not averse to accepting the wages offered, seeing they can make from 10s. to 12s. per day, but the Union is fearful that a general reduction might ensue in all the stores if one was allowed to reduce the price.
