British Protectorate over New Guinea.
[Reuter’s Telegrams.] London, August 11. Replying to a question put in the House of Commons with regard to the protectorate which it was proposed to establish over New Guinea, Mr. Gladstone announced that the territory which would be brought under Imperial jurisdiction would comprise part of the coast to the eastward of that claimed by the Dutch Government, and the south east, but excluding certain portions on the north of the island, and also islands to the east and north of New Guinea. The jurisdiction which it was intended to establish would be sufficient to afford full protection to the Natives against acts of lawlessness which might be attempted by Europeans, whether Englishmen or of foreign nationality. Replying to another question having reference to New Guinea, the Hon. Evelyn Ashley, Under Secretary for the Colonies, stated that Government intended to establish a commissionership in New Guinea, in addition to the office of High Commissioner of the Western Pacific.
