[Reuter’s Telegrams.] PRISONER SHOT. Melbourne, August 5. A prisoner confined in Pentridge Stockade made an unsuccessful attempt to escape today, and lost his life. He was observed by the warders, who fired upon him and killed him. Sailed this afternoon—Union steamship Te Anau for the Bluff. Sydney, August 6, Arrived yesterday afternoon—Wakatipu, from Wellington. THE NEW LAND BILL. The Legislative Assembly has been sitting the whole night discussing the Land Bill on the motion for the third reading. The debate still (10 a.m. still continues.
