TOLOGA BAY LETTER.

[from our own correspondent.] A meeting was held in the Sea View Hotel on Saturday evening last, to consider the advisability of petitioning the Education Board to establish a school in this district, > the number of youngsters springing up necessitating the adoption of some such course. Mr. W. F. Hale being voted to the chair, opened the proceedings by reading such extracts from the Education Act, as related to the question. The result of the meeting was the of a committee of three working members, viz., the Chairman, and . Messrs. Peters and Swainson, to acquire all the necessary information, frame petition, and have the same transmitted to headquarters by first opportunity. That such an institution is urgently needed is evinced by the rapidly rising population to be seen on all sides, and I am pleased to note that my exertions in this matter, in previous communications, have at length aroused the lethary of Tologaites to action.

The weather during the last few days has been magnificent, and the roads are redly good for this period of the vear. I notice that a start (and not before time) has been made to improve the track over the slip near Waitotara. Captain Winter, who was up the Coast a few days ago, has laid out a new line over this wretched hill, and has Natives forming it. When finished it will be a great improvement. Two men have also this last week been engaged in clearing out side drains, reopening culverts, and fascining the worst portions of the road from Tologa to the foot of the hill coming towards Gisborne, which urgently needed something doing to. Messrs. Corcoran and McLeod are progressing rapidly towards the completion of their respective contracts. The former has nearly all the formation finished and is now putting in culverts,
