[Per Press Association.] THE GOVERNOR. Wellington, August 1. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Major Cantley, arrived by the Hinemoa from Lyttelton, at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. MARBLE COMPANY. The Caswell Sound Marble Company have made a test of their machinery, recently constructed here, and found it work very satisfactorily, Operations are to be commenced at the quarry without delay. INQUEST. At the inquest on the boy Jeremiah Savage, who was drowned on Castle Point beach, a verdict of found drowned was returned. The deceased was galloping along the beach and it is supposed he was thrown from his horse. GEDDOSICAL OBSERVATIONS. Mr. 0. W. Adams, Geddosical Surveyor, has just completed observations in connection with the transit of Venus, to determine accurately the longitude of New Zealand. He now goes to Auckland to take sideral observations to determine accurately the latitude of New Zealand and its true meridian. The observations will probably be taken at Gisborne, Tauranga, Napier, and other points on the East Coast of New Zealand. Mr. Adams leaves by the Hinemoa to-night for Manukau. The Hinemoa has orders to keep a look-out for the derelict vessel reported by the Captain of the Stormbird. She will also brobably call at Kawhia en route for Manukau. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Messrs. E. Pearse and »J. E. Nathan were appointed delegates to represent the Wellington Chamber at the forthcoming conference at Christchurch. EARTHQUAKE. Greymouth, August 1. A very heavy shock of earthquake was felt at Ohaura at 10.35 this morning, accompanied by a rumbling noise, and shaking of houses. WRECK. Wanganui, August 1. Captain Doile, of the s.s. Stormbird, reports passing the hull of a large vessel, bow up, about 15 miles N.W. of Kapiti. It was painted black, and appeared to be about seventy tons register. A later telegram says :—lt is considered probable that the direlict vessel, seen off Kapiti Island, is the schooner Clyde, now overfour weeks out from Sydney to Foxton. She was commanded by a Captain Grant. BANQUET. Auckland, August 1. Mr. Peacock entertained his committee, some 70 strong, at a banquet last night. SUPPOSED WRECK. Nothing further has been heard of the
brigantine Parnell. [This will probably be vessel seen by the Stormbird referred to in another telegram]. INQUEST. At the inquest on the young man Boyce, killed by a trolly at Hellaby’s a verdict of accidental death was returned. SHIPMENT OF PRIZE STOCK. The Rotomahana takes a quantity of prize stock to Sydney. NARROW ESCAPE FROM POISONING. Dunedin, August 1. At the Cromwell Post Office two officials, in counting letters (moistening the fingers to do so), experienced sickness and internal qualms. It was found on examination that a package of strychnine among the letters had got loose. I
COMMERCIAL. The Equitable Investment Society have declared a 10 per eent. dividend for the year. SUDDEN DEATH. Oamaru, August 1. Andrew Aikenhead, a well-known farmer, was found dead in his bedroom yesterday. The cause of death is not known. New Plymouth, August 1. The New Plymouth Gas Company, at their annual meeting, declared a dividend of 10 per cent, per annum. They also reduced the price of gas to 10s, and 125., according to the quantity burnt. The quantity of gas sold was 3,000,000 feet.
