A man who was unable to pay his way assigned as a reason “Marriage of two daughters who had principally supported him I”

Ringing the Fire Bell.—The night watch man displayed his energy and the advantage of the new apparatus in ringing the bell last night. We think the energy was a little out of place seeing the fire was several miles off. Steam was got up and the brigade turned out, but all to no purpsse. The deputy-superin-tendent informs us that another trial of the bell will be made next Wednesday evening, when the brigade will meet for their ordinary practice.

The bank of the river has been sloped off, trees have been planted right along from the wharf to the ferry, and a footpath formed and metalled. Read’s Quay should now become the fashionable promenade, and will undoubtedly be a favorite resort for pedestrians as the summer comes on.

Memoranda.—ln our shipping column we have placed a table of expected arrivals and projected departures for the convenience of those whose business necessitates a knowledge of shipping movements.
