The Executive and Political Committee of the Orange Society, ask candidates to oppose grants to denominational schools, and reduce grants to orphan homes connected with any religious body when the cost of such home is in excess of Government Institutions, to maintain the present subdivision of .city electorates, and to support nominated immigration only. One half of the immigrants to be English, and the other half to be in proportion of the three Scotch, and one Irish. A DISHONEST SALVATIONIST. Coptic off Cape Connella.” The Coptic left Plymouth three days before the Ruapehu. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. What is believed to have been an attempt at suicide was brought to light to-day, about 9 o’clock. A vetinary surgeon named Stanford was discovered in a comatose state, and on Dr. Lawson’s services being brought into requisition, it was found that the man was suffering from the effects of a heavy dose of laudanum. The sufferer was taken into the surgery, and on the stomach pump being applied a quantity of poision was removed. The man was soon out of danger, and removed to the police station. SUPREME COURT. At the Supreme Court to-day Thomas J. Gleir was acquitted on a charge of perjury. The British Queen, from London via Port Chalmers, arrived here at six o’clock this evening. INFANTICIDE. A case of infanticide occurred at Taneru yesterday. A young girl, named Annie Anderson, was confined of a child, which was subsequently found dead with marks of violence on its body.

WORTHY OF EMULATION. Dunedin, July 10. Mr. Fulton has forwarded to the Otago University £lO5, (one half his honorarium), to form a nucleus of scholarship. The University Council have agreed to recommend to the Presbyterian Synod to form a chair of natural philsophy. OPENING OF A NATIVE CHURCH. Blenheim, July 9. The newly erected church at Wairau Pa was opened yesterday in the presence of a great crowd of Europeans of all denominations. Episcopalian, Wesleyan, and Presbyterian Ministers wore present, with Major Pollard and Bandmaster Tucker, of the Salvation Army. A public meeting in the church was presided over by Archdeacon Butt, who has completed 40 years service in Nelson and Marlborough. The new church cost £350. and is all paid for by the Wairau Maoris out of moneys belonging to the tribe of which Bore, son of one of the principal leaders in the Wairau massacre, is chief.
