Destructive and Fatal Fire.
[Per Press Association.] Hawera, July 5. A large fire occurred at Cook’s Hotel last night, and the place was completely gutted. The fire broke out at the fireplace of one of the sitting rooms and quickly spread, having a firm hold before the brigade could get to work. They managed, however, to prevent the whole building being destroyed and the fire spreading to the adjoining block. Some of the furniture and stock were saved, but the place is quite a wreck. Insurance, £l,OOO in the Northern; stock, £7OO in the New Zealand; building, £5OO in the National. A man named Thomas Kilroy, who was sleeping in one of the rooms, was suffocated and the body was found afterwards slightly charred. He appeared to have been dazed by the smoke, as he was found on his hands and knees on the floor and could easily have escaped.
