[Per United Press Association.] ELECTION MATTERS. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE—£II,SOO PROPERTY DESTROYED. FATAL DYNAMITE EXPLOSION. Wellington, June 24. The Wakatipu arrived from Sydney at 7.15 this morning. During the passage Mr. Wilford Smith, of Lyttelton, a saloon passenger, died of consumption. The New Zealand footballers are passengers. The Members of the House of Representatives will entertain the Footballers at a dinner to-night, Sir Wm, Fitzherbert, Speaker of the Legislative Council, presiding. It is understood the Governor will be a guest. A child named White had the muscles and sinews of one leg torn away below the knee by getting the leg entangled in a trolly-wheel while in motion. Hokitika, June 24. On Saturday afternoon a man named Louis Jan, employed by the contractor for removing piles on the wharf, was the victim of an explosion of dynamite. He was ramming the dynamite into a tuba when it exploded, shattering both his legs. He was removed to the Hospital, where he died two hours after the accident. Auckland, June 24. It is understood that Mr. J. M. Clark, who ran Sir Geo. Grey so closely for City East, at the last election, will not stand for any seat this time. Jaggar and Parker’s sawmills in Customhouse Street, owned by the New Zew Zealand Timber Company, were destroyed by fire this morning. They were insured for £lO,OOO in the South British, but the loss will be fully £1,500 above that amount. Oamaru, June 24. Mr. Mitchell, of the Oamaru Mail, has been asked to contest Oamaru against all comers. He has not yet replied. Duncan Solomons, county chairman will contest Waitaki. Ashburton, June 24. The secretary of Sir Julius Vogel’s local committee received a telegram on Saturday, stating that he placed his candidature in the hands of his Ashburton supporters. Dunedin, June 24. Messrs. Walker and Cairncross, will oppose Mr. Fulton for the Taieri. Mr. David Forsyth, of Dunedin, opposes Mr. McDonald for Bruce. Greymoutii, June 21. The electoral roll for the district has received a most thorough revision. A great many nameshave been struck off, but a large number have been put on by the friends of Mr. A. R. Guinness, and Mr. J. Petrie (the present member) who are very active in getting voters to register. A keen contest is expected if no other candidate comes in the field. No other is yet spoken of.
