A return# of telegraphic inteligence received this day :— The Upper House adjourned until to-day to take the question of Supply if sent up from the Lower Chamber. The House of Representatives met at 2.30. when several private bills were read a second time. Mr. Holmes gave notice to reduce the honorarium for the present session to £5O. Major Atkinson, Premier, said he proposed to fix the honorarium at £lOO. In reply, Major Atkinson said he would not facilitate any measure to interfere with the duration of Parliament. The Premier complained that a section of the House was obstructing the business occasioned by the confidence motion. Mr. Dargaville charged Ministers as adepts in manipulation majorities to suit themselves. Mr. Montgomery charged the Premier with browbeating and overbearing conduct, and Mr. Turnbull defended the course taken by the Opposition. He contended that the Opposition should have gone the length of stopping supplies. Major Atkinson gave notice that he would ask at the rising of the House to sit again to-morrow (this day.) The House went into Committee of Supply. Mr. Mitchelson said it was not intended to make any Public Works Statement. J. W. Thomson contended there was a large deficiency. That £150,000 as stated by the Treasurer, they were already three months into the financial year. They were asked for other two months, so the deficit would be that proportion of time in excess of the £150,000. The Customs Revenue was overestimated, £123,000. Railway receipts, £56,000. These facts should make the Treasurer ashamed of himself. He had expended £187,000 in excess of income.
A letter has been received by the Wellington Cricket Association, from Conway, informing the Association that an English team will come to New Zealand if proper arrangements can be made. The matte? stands in abeyance. J. Whitely King, journalist, contests New Plymouth against Mr. Thomas Kelly. Mr. Charles Johnston seeks re-election for Te Aro electorate. The suit of Grey v. Grey for nullity of marriage, has been discontinued by the petitioner, it being understood that she is unable to substantiate her charge. At Oraiondville, (Napier), the licensing bench have refused licenses to all the hotels in the district. The hotel-keepers take proceedings in the Supreme Court, and have closed to all-comers, pending result of the decision. Passengers by the afternoon train will have to sleep in railway carriages, or camp out for the night. The rain storm has washed away five chains of the railway line at Waitangi, by the encroachment of the Ngaruroro river. During the night the river broke through the beach were works have been undertaken to open a channel. The danger is now removed of the river cutting into the Ahuriri lagoon. The rivers are now falling. Matthewson Bros., earthenware importers, have failed, and filed. Major Atkinson is not likely to be opposed at Dunedin. Sir George Grey has been asked by the electors of Hawera, to deliver an address on his way to Auckland. Mr. J. Hulbert, Mayor of Christchurch, has been invited to stand for Christchurch North. Mr. Stanmore Joynt, solicitor, is asked to oppose Mr. Holmes for Christchurch South. For Ashley, Mr. Higgins is likely to oppose Mr. Pearson. Messrs. J. D. Lance, A. Saunders, and Adams are probable candidates for Cheviot. A fire broke out at 7 o’clock in the morning in a block of buildings owned by Mr. C. Tennent, at Patea. A quantity of wheat was damaged belonging to Mr. Davis. There is insurance for £BOO in the South British. Yesterday afternoon, in the same settlement, a fire broke out in Gibbon’s Brewery. Very little damage was sustained. At an adjourned meeting in Dunedin of Turnbull’s creditors, Mr. Ferrier said the Bank of New Zealand were prepared to accept £4,000 as their portion of the amount due by Turnbull. It was resolved that Turnbull’s offer of £5,500 be accepted. A requisition to Mr. Street, Mayor of Dunedin, to stand for Dunedin East is being circulated. Mr. Buckland contests Waikouaiti.
