The Telephone. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, SATURDAY, JUNE 21.
The Financial Statement. — The budget speect, delivered by Major Atkinson yesterday, was put on the wires last night at eight o’clock. It consists of about sixteen thousand words. The whole was placed in the hands of the printers before eight o’clock this morning, in clear writing, and so far as we think, without a single mistake. The operator, with such work cut out for him, must have had a very exausting night.
Wesleyan Church.—The Rev. G. W. J. Spence is announced to preach in the Schoolhouse, Makaraka, to-morrow, at 3 p.m.
U.S.S. Service.—The Manapouri arrived in the Bay about 2.30 this afternoon from Auckland. The following passengers are booked to leave by her :—Messrs. McGuire, Whinray, W. Fox, Morrow, Butt, Ebbling, Locke, Weaver, Siddons, R. Nock, Mrs. C. 0. Fischer, Misses Dinan, and Heartueady. Supplement.—We regret disappointing our readers at not being able to furnish our usual weekly supplement. They are at this present time deep in the bosom of the steamer which carried them beyond their destination. By return ship, wind and weather permitting, our readers will be placed in possession of the missing sheet. Resident Magistrate’s Court.—The only business before the Court this morning was woman McDonald. Medical evidence was taken which proved that she had been suffering from drink, but had now sufficiently recovered to be discharged. The woman was therefore permitted to go at large, with a caution from the Bench that she should refrain from strong drink. Billiard Match.—A friendly match was played last evening at the Masonic Hotel, between Messrs. Weiss (professional), and Mr. Stewart (amateur), of 1000 up, the former conceeding 500 points. After a brilliant display of science on both sides, the game resulted in favor of Mr. Weiss by 72 points. The hightest break made by the winner was 123, and his opponent’s best effort reached 89. Mr. Weiss states that he played better last night in consequence of a more perfect knowledge of the table. There were a large number present, and both the contestants were occasionally loudly applauded.
The Waka Maori.—No. 8 of this very interesting Maori publication, printed and published at the Telephone Office, was issued this morning. It contains a full resume of the political events of the month, together with other intelligence of a general nature, such as is suitable to the enquiring nature of our Maori brethren in this part of the North Island.
Dramatic Entertainment.—The Willmott Theatrical Company, open a new season on Monday evening in McFarlane’s Hall. The pieces selected for representation are the Romantic Comedy of “ Meg’s Diversion,” and the burlesque of “ Cinderella.” Both plays have had continuous runs of over three hundred nights in England. They have paid the management, and have more than repaid the audiences by the immense diversion they have afforded them for their money.
Ancient Order of Druids.—The members of the newly-formed Gisborne branch of the above order gave a supper last evening in the Masonic Hotel, in honor of Messrs. Polkenhorn and Barrows, who came as delegates from Napier to open the lodge. About 25 gentlemen were present—Mr. F. Cassin occupying the chair. During the evening the usual toasts were given and responded to, interspersed with several excellent songs, all of which were accompanied by Mr. Crawford in his invariably happy manner. A most enjoyable evening was spent, and the company separated shortly before midnight.
