CORRESPONDENCE.
We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.) TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —Among the other political dodges resorted to in the late contest, with a view to prejudcing me in the eyes of the public, the latest I understand is to the effect that I have endeavored to act against the interests of the town of Gisborne, with respect to the construction of the Bridge at the foot of Gladstone road. To me, personally, it is a matter of perfect indifference whether or not, a bridge is constructed. The course pursued by me with respect to the bridge in question was clearly defined in a letter addressed to the Herald, and published in that paper of the 4th March 1884. The question of the erection of a bridge is purely of a £s. d. character. If the people of the town of Gisborne, and the County of Cook, require a bridge of the Waimata river, they can have on it the following terms—£l,soo Government grant, £5OO from Land Co. If they require one at the end of Gladstone Road, they can have it on these terms, £1,500 from Government, and the balance £2,500, (according to Drummond’s estimate), to be subscribed by themselves and Government—that is by the ratepayers of the town and County. Again, I say, I have no earthly interest in the construction of the bridge one way or the other, —nor have I done anything with respect to it for months past, and then what I did was done publicly in the public print, and for the public good. To attempt now to make political out of what I had written to the Press over three months ago, is as unfair, as it is politically dishonest; and is only done to subserve some unworthy purpose. Many Borough Councils are not remarkable for their wisdom.—l am, &c., M. G. Gannon.
