THE ELECTIONS.
MB. LOCKE HEADS THE POLL. Between half-past seven and eight o’clock last night, Mr. D. Johnson, Returning Officer, declared the result of the polling at Gisborne, as follows :—
Gisborne. Locke .. ... . * 283 Rees 239 Gannon .. t. ... 183 Informal i. .. . ■. 7 The following returns from the undermentioned places were received by telegraph since the above declaration :— Wairoa. The news spread like lightning, and a large crowd soon collected in the street opposite the Masonic Hotel, where it was announced the candidates would address them. Mr. Locke appeared first and returned thanks for their having placed him in the envious position of head of the poll that night, and explained how gratifying it was to him to be in that position. He spoke at further length, but there was too much tumult and disturbance to hear what the real gist of his remarks was. Mr. Gannon followed) returning his thanks to those who had placed him as second man. Mr. Rees did not show up at all. After this, almost a free fight took place amongst the crowd, though the police with difficulty managed to suppress it. To-day the returns from the various polling places, have been received as under Rangaiika.
