[Per United Press Association.] INQUEST. Mosgiel, June 16. At the inquest on Alexander Todd, who was killed while crossing the railway line, a verdict of accidental death was returned, and no blame was attached to anyone. The evidence showed that deceased had been drinking before the accident, but was quite capable of taking care of himself. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Auckland, June 16.' A gumdigger named Logan, attempted suicide by cutting his throat, and stabbing himself in several places. Slight hopes are entertained of his recovery. He had been drinking heavily lately.

A boat has been picked up off Coralli Island, containing two men who had deserted from the scow Ruakaka at Mongonui, bound for Sydney, as they thought the voyage too risky for the vessel. They were at sen 24 hours without food or water before being picked up.

The barque Androcales, from Hongkong to Auckland with sugar, was towed into Manuhau Harbor by the Lalla Rookh, having been found outside making signals of distress. Two of the crew had died and six were disabled with some unknown disease, and all the others on board were exhausted with extra duty. A doctor has proceeded on board. It is reported that the Natives at Ohinemutu have at last agreed to accept an offer from the Government of ss. per acre for 20,000 acres—the land to be handed over to the Thames-Rotorua Railway Co. Richard Lestige McGee, son of the wellknown race horse proprietor of that name, died somewhat suddenly from tetanus which, arose from what was at first considered to be a trivial injury to his knee. A barmaid in a Queen Street hotel attempted suicide last night by taking poison. She had been upstairs, and on coming down found her inamorata fooling with another girl, high words it is said ensued, and ended by her subsequently taken poison, or what is believed to be poison. An emetic of mustard and warm water was successfully administered to the love stricken maiden. SERIOUS PANIC.

A serious panic occurred at the Opera House last night. Mr. Brown was lecturing on the Church of Rome, the place being packed a number of youths in the vistibule cried fire, and tramped heavily down stairs. Mr. Brown attempted to quieten the audience. Crowds rushed for the door, although some remained quiet. Numbers of women fainted, and some people were slightly injured.

Christchurch, June The third body at the Leeston fire has been identified as that of William Thompson, who left the Leeston Hotel the previous evening the worse for liquor. There is no clue to the origin of the fire. Mr. J. E. Brown, M.H.R., for St. Albans, has telegraphed to the effect that he will not offer himself for re-election.

At a meeting of footballers on Saturday night, it was resolved to start a subscription list, in view of presenting the Canterbury representatives of the Intercolonial team with medals on their return.
