The Telephone. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, TUESDAY, JUNE 10. Local and General.

Holy Trinity Church. —The Bev. Mr. Fox has arrived at Dunedin, and may be expected to arrive here on Sunday by the Southern boat. Auction Sale.— All to-day the sale of Mr. Whinray’s goods by Messrs. Graham, Pitt and Bennett has been going on. The prices realised were in some cases good, but many valuable articles went for almost half their value. Consultation. — “John Bull’s” consultation, the programme of which appears in another column is a thoroughly genuine one and offers special inducements to investors, who should lose no time in making applicaions.

Nominations for Borough Councillor.— The nominations of a councillor to fill the seat vacated by Cr. Tucker, closed to-day at twelve o’clock. There was only one person, Mr. G. R. Moore, nominated, who was proposed by Mr. W. J. Quigley. He, being the only one nominated, was duly declared elected by the Returning Officer, and will therefore take his seat to-night.

Gisborne Institute.—For the information of members of the institute we are asked to state that to-morrow evening will be devoted to readings, recitations, &c. The Rev. Archdeacon Williams will give a paper on Wednesday week, to which ladies and other friends of the members will be invited. The subject will be duly announced. Electoral Roll.—A sitting of the R.M. Court will be held at the Courthouse, Gisborne, on Tuesday, the 17th of June, at the hour of 10 o’clock in the morning, for the purpose of revising the electors’ rolls of the several ridings of the County of Cook for the year 1884-5. All persons who have sent objections to the said rolls can appear in support of their objections. Ancient Order of Druids. —A meeting was held at the Masonic Hotel last night for the purpose of starting a Lodge in connection with the above Order in Gisborne. There was a large attendance, and over thirty gave in their names as members. This number has, we believe, been increased since. Another meeting will shortly be held, which will be duly notified by advertisement, when it is , hoped that all who take an interest in the j movement, and wish to become members, will put in an appearance. j

Parnell and Boylan’s Hall.—-Messrs, Parnell and Boylan’s great compulsory sale is now on at their Hall, and intending investors will do well to make a visit of inspection. They will derive every advantage from the severe depression now ruling business and exceptional bargains can be secured.

Errata.—ln the concluding paragraph of our leader yesterday, the omission of the little word “If ” caused it to read “ Mr. Gannon, at the present time, is not to be entrusted &c.,” whereas it should have read “If Mr.j Gannon is not at the present time entrusted with the suffrages of the electors, a time is not far distant, when he must command the respect of all, &c.” We apologise to Mr. Gannon.

Football.—There was a very meagre attendance of footballers on Saturday afternoon last, to play the match Pakehas v. Maoris. About five or six members of the club were present, the rest being outsiders and natives. We must say that this looks bad, and if our men intend to contest a match against a Napier team, they will.have to display a little more energy in practicing. We should think they were fully aware of that fact, having had such hard tussells with their old opponents in former matches. It will look extremely bad if our men go down to Napier and receive an ignominious “ licking,” anl lose the name |of being good footballers, which they have always had. At the annual meeting of the club, fresh officers were elected to manage its affairs for the coming season, and they evidently appear to be anything but enegetic, as the old hands were. We trust that the members may see their way to have daily practice, and so perfect themselves for the coming match.

R.M. Court.—On the opening of the Court this morning the Clerk informed the Bench that the Resident Magistrate would return to Gisborne by the next steamer to resume his duties. A large number of cases beyond the jurisdiction of the justices were enlarged till Mr. Booth’s return. Judgment by default for plaintiffs was given in the cases of Watson v. Hamlin and Parnell and Boylan v. P. Breingan. Bilham v. School Commissioners. This was a claim for rates overdue to the Patutahi Road Board. The Commissioners, by telegram, admitted the claim, and paid the amount into Court. J. Stewart v. Crawford and Carroll —enlarged at the request of Mr. Finn, solicitor for plaintiff. O’Meara v. Thompson — judgment summons. Amount ordered to be paid before the end of August, or in default three days imprisonment. The Hospital.—A special meeting of the Hospital Committee was held last night at the Court House to decide on the applications received for the appointment of wardsman and matron of the Gisborne Hospital. There were twenty-two applications received, accompanied with testimonials. After consideration it was decided to reject eighteen, leaving four to be decided upon after due enquiry has been made concerning their suitability. Fifteen of the applications were received from Auckland and seven from Gisborne. Of those reserved for consideration two are from Auckland and two] from Gisborne. No other business was transacted. The decision of the above will be known on Wednesday, the 11th inst., the night of the General Committee meeting. The Soudan. —The latest intelligence from the East show that the rebels are evincing a veryflarge amount of renewed activity in the neighbourhood of Souakim, and the disposition of the large forces under Osman Digna have become so threatening as to render it expedient to reinforce that garrison without delay. With this object in view, all the British marines and a batallion of Egyptian regulars will be at once despatched there with a view of strengthening the post. The important town of Berber has at last fallen to the rebels, and from the meagre accounts contained in the cablegrams, we learn that the struggle was a very brief one. A portion of the Egyptian garrison surrendered their arms and went over to the enemy, the remainder were cut down to a man. Circumstances tend most plainly to show that the reluctant steps which the British Government are now taking for the relief of Khartoum, and, we trust, the general pacification of the Soudan, have not been forced upon its consideration one moment too soon, and unless everything be carried out with all expedition there appeary evers probability that its main object, the rescue of General Gordon, will prove unavailing and be lost.
