In the Divorce Court, Jane Mary Stainsla O’Kearne petitions in a suit for a drecree of nullity of her marriage with James Grattan Gray, reporter, of Wellington. The alleged grounds are physical mal-formation. Mr. Shaw is counsel for the petitioner, and the case will be heard next sitting of the Divorce Court. Wahanui dicFnot come into Wellington as expected. It is supposed that he is staying with his Maori friends between Wanganui and Wellington. The report that payable gold is being found near Masterton is discredited. A dispute and law proceedings are talked of between the Chairman of Directors and the Secretary of the Gear Meat Company. At the Te Aro Licensing Committee, all the applications were granted. The Te Aro Licensing Commissioners have granted most of the houses extension to midnight. Dunning’s Opera Troupe wound up their season last night with a very successful benefit to Mr. Dunning. They leave for Napier to-night, MR. GEORGE THORNE’S ACTION. The action brought by Mr. George Thorne against the Government Insurance Department, claiming damages, will not come on for hearing until August next. Auckland, June 7. The child Strong, missing at Aratapu, was found by a search party drowned at the Booms near the Aratapu Sawmills. It is reported here that the proprietor of one of the hotels which license was refused, intends to issue a writ against the Licensing Commissioners for for £l,OOO damage. RETRENCHMENT. It is said that three first-class police sergeants are to be removed from Auckland, and their place to be filled by a Sergeantmajor. This is by way of retrenchment. It has been decided by the Pastoral Association to hold a horse parade on the 20th of September. THE EDUCATION ACT. The City School Committee have refused to endorse Mr. Steward’s (M.H.R.) circular for alteration in the Education Act. The new seasons wheat in the Waikato is reported to be of equal quality with that imported from Adelaide. NEW CHEESE FACTORY. Arrangements are being made for a new Cheese Factory at Taupori. PAINFUL ACCIDENT. Dunedin, June 7. The infant child of Mrs. Sterling, South Dunedin, was severely burned while being washed on Wednesday evening. The child died yesterday, the matter was not reported to a doctor in the meantime.

Blenheim, June 7. The proprietors of the Marlborough Express have been served with a writ by the directors of the Marlborough Freezing Company-for alleged libel. The claim is for £2,000. A workshop and contents have been destroyed by fire at Roslyn th-* igh a son of the owner playing with matches. Value £l,ooo—uninsured.

Christchurch, June 7. At the Woodend Licensing Committee meeting the White Crane license was granted but that for the Royal was adjourned. Four out of five members of the Committee elected are in the Temperance interest, and they purposed considering the advisability of closing the Royal.
