Walters, injured by falling down the hold of the Manapouri, is dead. A Waikato farmer named Mitchell was killed by a tree falling on him. Serious charges of immorality have been laid against the officers of the Crusader by tne passengers. Mr. Bloomfield, a local artist, sent home several cases of pictures of New Zealand scenery by the Doric. On arrival in England it was discovered that the case was empty and the pictures gone. Jermam, the so called New Zealand blondin, has been arrested at Te Aroha for stealing two flags. Christchurch, June 5. Early this morning an unoccupied house of three rooms in the North Belt was destroyed by fire. Insurance £lOO in the Standard, Blenheim, June 5. All three Licensing Committees have determined to limit the closing hours of hotels to 11 p.m. Dunedin, June 5. The Bell Licensing Committee has restricted all licenses to 10 o’clock. The Chairman charged the Temperance party with acting revengefully. On account of the action of the other two Committees, the Water of Leith Committee will to-morrow reduce all licenses to 10. Wellington, June 5. A six-roomed dwelling house at South Karori, owned by Mr. Allan Lever, was destroyed by fire on Monday night. It was insured in the South British for £lOO. The building was unoccupied, and it is believed that the fire was caused by some lads attempting to smoke a swarm of bees, which had taken up their quarters in a part of the building. The steamer Ruapehu, which is on her way from London to New Zealand, comes to Wellington direct. At the Banco Court to-day, before Justice Richmond, an argument was heard in the case of Faber v. Regina. E. Shaw for the appelant, who is a publican, was convicted by two justices for allowing liquor to b 3 consumed on a Sunday by persons not being bona fide travellers or lodgers. The question was whether, in order to make a conviction, it should not be proved. That defendant was licensee within a district proclaimed to be a licensing district by the Government. This point was not raised till after the conviction, and Mr. Shaw now submitted that as a Gazette had not bean put in showing that the district had been duly proclaimed, the matter must be construed strictly against the Crown in a penal statute. His honor however dismissed the appeal, with costs. The sum of £2,600, out of £3,000 required to rebuild St. John’s Church has already been subscribed. Wellington, June 5. The Thorndon Licensing Committee to-day refused all midnight licenses, and eleven o’clock licenses have been granted to all except two, which close at ten. Mr. Bryce has received notice from his solicitors that Mr. Rusken has lodged a plea of justification as a defence to the action for slander. The Hon. Major Atkinson is confined to his house with bronchitis, and, unless anything of importance occurs, will not be out until Tuesday. Nelson, June 5. Last evening a dwelling house at Foxhill, owned and occupied by Henry Wrigley, was burned down during the absence of the occupants. A man named Godbag, who went upstairs with a view to saving the furniture, was unable to descend again, and with difficulty effected his escape by an upper window'. The house is said to have- been insured in the South British for a small amount. The furniture was uninsured.
