The Telephone. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, THURSDAY, MAY 29. Local and General.

Mails.—Mails for Auckland per Southern Cross, will close on Friday, (to-morrow evening), at 7 p.m. Shipping.—The schooner Gisborne will not sail for a few days. She has finished discharging, and is now engaged in shipping a general cargo for the coast and Auckland. Inspection.—We remind the members of the J Battery, that the usual monthly Inspection parade will take place to-night at the drill shed, before Captain Winter, in the absence of Captain Porter. L. & M. Co.’s Buildings.—The foundation of the Loan & Mercantile Company’s buildings is now completed, and the framework being erected. U.S.S. Service.—The Te Anau is expected in the Bay to-morrow afternoon from Auckland. The Manapouri will be here from Melbourne and Southern ports, on Sunday morning. The Southern Cross will leave Napier on Friday night, and therefore may be looked for early on Saturday morning. She will proceed north the same day. The last boat for the Te Anau to-morrow, will probable leave the wharf at five o’clock. The Institute. —We believe that an entertainment in aid of the Young Men’s Institute will be held on Tuesday night next. We trust that the promoters will see their way to alter the date, as Wilmott’s Comedy Company are announced to perform on that night, and this would most likely interfere with their having a good attendance. Deepening the River.—The marine rake for deepening the river, has now been altered, the teeth having been made longer and the whole affair heavier so that it can get a better hold of the mud. Since this alteration, it has been again tried with a more satisfactory result than before, though ever now it is not up to what is required. A Change.—We hear that a change is about to take place in the proprietors of the Settlers and Roseland Hotels. On Saturday night next, Mr. C. O. Fischer, now in the employ of Mr. J. R. Scott of the Masonic, will take possession of the Settler’s Hotel, whilst Mr. E. Beresford does the same with the Roseland Hotel, the present proprietor having detei mined to give it up. We wish both gentlemen every success in their new enterprise.

J Battery.—The third competition for the champion belt presented to the Battery by Mr. A. McDonald, will take place at the range on Saturday afternoon next, commencing at 2.30. At present Gunner Hansen is the favorite, but some doubts are entertained as to who will get it, because he has to allow his opponents about five points each.

Billiard Match.—A billiard match took place at the Masonic Hotel last night between Mr. Wiess and Mr. J. Carroll, the former giving the latter 500 points in 1000. The game lasted about three hours, and resulted in a victory for Mr. Carroll by some 300 odd points. It is said that Mr. Wiess could have beaten his opponent, only he was trying to make a hundred break, which he had wagered he would make during the game, but failed to do so. R.M. Court.—There was no business at the R.M. Court this morning. Yesterday afternoon a man named Bedwin, who was brought up a short time ago for disorderly conduct whilst drunk at Makaraka, was again brought up on three charges of assault at the same place. Mr. Robinson defended the accused, and after several witnesses were examined, their Worships, (Messrs. Common and Tucker J.P.’s), adjourned the case until Saturday morning.
