[Per United Press Association.] Wanganui, May 28. The Mayor, Mr. Carson, entertained Wahanui and suite at luncheon yesterday. Mr. Watt, M.H.R., Mr. Ballance, and other local notabilities were present. Wahanui expressed gratification at his reception, and hoped all hinderances to prospecting the country would be removed SIR JULIUS VOGEL. Christchurch, May 28. It has been suggested that Sir Julius Vogel should be asked to contest this seat with Mr. Rolleston. Wellington, May 27. The Post to-night publishes a private telegram stating that Mr. Piliett, member for Stanmore, has offered to resign his seat in favor of Sir Julius Vogel, and if the latter will stand, no opposition is anticipated. It is hoped that work may be resumed in the Kaitangata coal mine within two or three days. The Auckland lumpers are out on strike, and every exertion is being made to disperse with the services of the Union men. An inquiry into the recent fire at St. John’s Church, will be held to-morrow. The Governor left Manukau for Wellington in the Hinemoa this morning. An incipient fire was discovered this morning in Neale’s grocery warehouse, Auckland. No serious damage was done. The Waikato Co-operative Association is about to establish a butcher’s shop in Auckland. A man named Berry was drowned while attempting to cross the Tuki Tuki River on Saturday last.
