The Telephone. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, FRIDAY, MAY 9. Local and General.

Beads’ Quay.—Mr. C. McDeavitt, the suecessful tenderer for the new works in Reads’ Quay, commenced his contract yesterday. U.S.S. Company’s Agent,—The manager of the Union S.S. Company, will not leave this place for Invercargill till next Friday week.

Gisborne Football Club. — The annual general meeting of the'above club will be held at the Masonic Hotel on Saturday evening next.

Waerenga-a-hika School.—A soiree, concert, and ball will be held in the above school house on the 16th inst. in aid of the school funds. For further particulars see advt.

Railway Conference. —A meeting of the Railway Conference took place last night in the County Council chambers. Very little importance can be attached to the proceedings. A report of the same will appear in our next.

Timber.—The Saucy Lass left Auckland last night, loaded with timber for Mr. J. Trimmer, which, through some mistake, was not shipped per schooner Waiapu as he expected, and the non-arrival of which has prevented him from completing numerous pressing orders. Marine Disaster.— London telegrams to hand this morning announce the disastrous news that the missing steamer State of Florida has been in collision with a barque in the Atlantic and sank almost immediately, carrying to the bottom 12.3 souls out of 167.

The Oriental Bank.—The gratifying intelligence is given this morning that depositors in the above bank will probably receive a dividend of 17s. 6d. in the -pound. It is stated that the stoppage was occasioned by a heavy run which was made on its Eastern branches, where unexpected and rapid withdrawals of deposits took place.

Striking the Rate.—After the meeting of the County Council, last night, it was agreed to leave it in the hands of the clerk as to whether a special meeting should be called, for the purpose of striking the rate of l-200th part of a penny in the pound, or to leave it for the next ordinary meeting.

Coastal.—The schooner Waiapu, Captain Nicholas, which arrived from Mercury Bay on Wednesday night, brings 30,000 feet of timber for J. R. Morgan and Co. and 500 posts. She is at present lying in the middle of the river on a mud-bank heeled over on her side. At high tide she will get alongside the wharf and discharge her cargo. She will leave for the Coast on or about Wednesday next.

Assault.—At the ,R.M. Court yesterday afternoon, Hori Mokai was charged with assaulting Wi Kingi Hori. The police prosecuted, and Mr. Brassey defended, Evidence was taken till late, when the case was adjourned until two o’clock to-day, at which time it was continued. The evidence went to show that the informant had been improperly conducting himself with the accused’s wife, for which accused assaulted the informant. Up to the time of our going to press, the decision of the bench had not been given.

School Committee.—The usual meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held on Wednesday night last. The master’s report was read and adopted. The Inspector of Nuisances wrote with regard to the boys’ urinal, making certain suggestions which were agreed on. It was decided to take steps for the erection of a wash-house. With regard to the non-attendance of children at school, it was ordered that the parents of such children have notice that they would be proceeded against. Mrs Mary East wrote, asking permission to visit the school in order to further the objects of the Auckland Scripture Gift Association. The meeting decided that they had no power to act in the matter.

U. S. S. Service.— The Wairarapa and Ringarooma will arrive here to-morrow and Sunday respectively. The Southern Cross leaves Auckland to-morrow about noon, and may be expected here the same time on Monday. She will call in at Tupaioa on her way down. She will leave for the south the same day, the last boat leaving the wharf at 4 p.m. Matawhero School.—The soiree in connection with this school takes place to-night. After tea an address will be delivered by the chairman of the school committee, to be followed by a concert in which several ladies and gentlemen well known in musical circles will assist. Several solos and duets, together with Ethiopian sketches will also assist in making the evening a thoroughly pleasant and enjoyable one. In order to afford town residents an opportunity of passing a happy night Mr. S. M. Wilson will run his break out to the above, leaving the Albion Club at 5 p m. this evening.

Graham Pitt and Bennett.—A reference to our advertising columns will inform our readers that Messrs. Graham Pitt and Bennett have opened a new line in the millinery department. Dressmaking in all its branches, under the able management of Mrs. Speight (a highly experienced lady from Christchurch), and|a competent staff of assistants, will be made a speciality of; whilst every novelty in millinery and trimmings, both English and Parsian, have been carefully selected with a view of meeting the requirements of the season. Mourning in all its branches prepared on the shortest possible notice. The wellknown reputation of this firm will ensure customers every satisfaction, and no pains will be spared to render this branch as fully complete as all their other lines, which have hither proved their own recommendation.
