The excitement which has been manifested in this city since the news of the failure of the Oriental Bank Corporation was received here has now calmed down. S.S. ROME’S PASSENGERS. The passengers per steamship Rome, who have been quarantined since the arrival of the vessel, were released to-day. NEW BANKING SPECULATION. Melbourne, May 7. It has transpired that Mr. John Pender, M.P., well known in London as Chairman of the Eastern Telegraph Co. and its branches, recently made enquiries in this city by telegraph regarding the prospect of establishing a bank on the ground hitherto occupied by the Oriental Bank Corporation. ACQUITTAL OF FLETCHER. The trial of R. B. Fletcher, late mining manager at Sandhurst, Victoria, on a further charge of embezzlement was continued today, and again resulted in the acquittal of the prisoner.
