(reuter’s telegrams.) THE HOMEWARD MAILS. London, May 7. The Homeward mails via Suez and Brindisi, dated Melbourne, March 27, were delivered here to-day. Her Majesty the Queen left Darmstadt yesterday en route for England. THE DECEASED WIFE’S SISTER BILL. In the House of Commons last night a resolution in favor of legalising marriage with a deceased wife’s sister was passed by a substantial majority. THE EGYPTIAN CONFERENCE. It has transpired that the Egyptian Government has sent a communication to the British Foreign Minister, in which they claim to have a voice in the deliberations at the proposed Conference on Egyptian affairs. TASMANIAN LOAN. Tenders for the £BOO,OO four per cent. loan for Tasmania were opened to-day, and were found to amount to a total of £2,250,000. THE TARIFF BILL. Washington, May 6. Congress has rejected the Tariff Bill, in which provisions had been made for a reduction to the extent of 20 per cent in the Customs duties of numerous articles, including wool and woollen goods. Several heavy private bank failures have occurred in New York. The well-known firm of Grant and Co. (Baron Grant) being partners in the insolvent concerns.
