Borough Council.—The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will be held to-night. There is very little business to be disposed of. Tologa Land Court.—Mr. W. Grey left for Tologa Bay yesterday with a view of opening the Land Court there, and then formally adjourning the same for some months. J Battery Ball.—At the Battery Ball committee meeting, which took place last night, no business of importance was transacted, other than the issuing of the invitations &c., which kept them occupied till midnight. Tenders.—The tenders called for by Mr. W. P. Finneran, for the erection of Mr. Groll’s cottage in Gisborne North, were opened at noon to-day. Mr. John Forbe’s being the lowest was accepted at £ll2 for labor and chimneys. The New Gold Discovery.—The excitement consequent upon the discovery of gold at Ross, still continues. Fresh tests tend to confirm the fact that good payable quartz exists, and leases are being pegged out, and twenty-fourth interests changing hands at £l5. U.S.S. Service.—The Southern Cross arrived early this morning from Napier and Wellington, but did not discharge any cargo on account of the rough weather. She left shortly after arrival for Tuparoa, where she will discharge the pipes for the Southern Cross Petroleum Company. From thence she goes on to Auckland. The Omapere arrived at Tauranga at 12.35 a.m., and the Rotomahana in Auckland at 4.20 yesterday. Mr. H. Lewis.—On our front page will be found Mr. H. Lewis’s new advertisement, which will appear in our next issue in a more prominent part of our sheet. Mr. Lewis has now on hand a splendid assortment of new autumn and winter clothing, including drapery in all varieties and groceries and oilman’s stores in qualities unsurpassed in this town. Intending buyers will find it greatly to their advantage to give Mr. Lewis a call and inspect his novelties.

All the other cases, numbering about twelve in all, were adjourned by His Worship, on the application of Mr iKenny, who spoke for the members of the Bar, that the cases might be taken at the next sitting of the Court, so that they might be enabled to attend the funeral of Mr Tyler, who died yesterday, and who was also a well-known member of the Bar. Therefore, those set down for hearing to-day stand adjourned until Friday next. Seaweed.—lt is astonishing to the ordinary run of thoughtless people to see what beautiful things can be made by the skilful artist out of Nature’s crudest material, when tastefully and artistically arranged. Such a work may be seen in the window of Mr. Adams, in the shape of a collection of seaweed, which was co '• ffed at Toh ja Bay and an ang<*d by Mr. Morrow during his attendance on the Lands Court there. The arrangement is in the marner of a basket prettily cor.strncted of smell shells, the gracefully curved patterns i. i;-r» f. •••.■. 1 nf ;hr?... f rr >T>if> <-<»•!.-’ 5 J.nown ■ • . clature of concbology as “elephants’ trunks.” The coloured weeds are shown to the best advantage, and the whole, including mounting and frame, gives evidence of good taste and considerable artistic skill.
